Paul Drayton's The Passion of Christ
as told by Mark the Evangelist
at Truro Cathedral
presented by Three Spires Singers & Orchestra
with Laura Newey (soprano)
Stephen Jeffes (tenor)
Robert Rice (baritone)
Oliver Morris (bass)
Conductor: James Anderson-Besant
Another chance to hear local Cornish composer Paul Drayton’s interpretation of the story of Christ’s betrayal and death. The text is different from J.S.Bach’s famous St Matthew and St John Passions, and includes extracts of English poetry and the Psalms, as well as Roman literature, with which the composer has appealed to the modern audience.
Speaking of his intentions he wrote, “The story is paramount”,……and……”the maximum variety of timbre, texture and dramatic pacing is absolutely essential.”
“The language of my work lies somewhere in the more temperate regions of post-World War II music.”
