Tavener The Last Sleep of the Virgin
The “Vespers” – which is not a setting for a church service but a concert piece – was one of Rachmaninov’s two favourite works. It is full of astonishingly rich romantic harmonies, dramatic contrasts and memorable folk and hymn tunes. It is also includes subterranean passages for the bass section – you won’t often hear a bottom B-flat in choral concerts! Its first performance was in March 1915 as part of a charity performance raising funds for Russian war wounded.
This hauntingly beautiful hour-long work will be accompanied by two pieces by the contemporary English composer John Tavener, whose work is steeped in the chants and traditions of the Eastern Orthodox Church.
NOTE; The performance will be given at the West end of the cathedral, with audience reversed. Seats in the Gallery will therefore NOT be available.
